From Supported Steps to Independent Strides: "JJ" Journey

Every child grows by achieving developmental milestones that shape their ability to learn, play, explore and interact with the world around them. While some children achieve these milestones easily, others may face challenges that require additional support, especially children born with medical conditions.

“JJ” is a 5-year-old boy who was diagnosed with Dandy Walker Syndrome, which is a congenital condition. Because of his medical condition, he had poor balance and coordination which made him unable to stand and walk independently. He had to be held when standing, and had to be carried just to move around. Because of this, Jesson couldn’t really participate in age-related activities such as playing.

“JJ” started undergoing physical therapy at SSHJM PT/OT Rehabilitation Center in 2022, when he was 2-years-old. His physical therapists focused on improving his balance and coordination by incorporating exercises through play, so that he can gain the necessary functional and mobility skills that will help him participate in activities meant for children. Despite facing some challenges throughout his therapy, such as "JJ" occasionally not wanting to finish the PT activity when he finds it difficult, he still did his best with the help and guidance of his physical therapists.

During the course of his physical therapy from 2022 to present, "JJ" showed steady improvements. By 2024, he gained the ability to stand without support for only a few seconds. In the first half of 2025, "JJ" was able to stand without support for a longer time, and could even walk a few steps with moderate support. Months later, he could finally walk independently. Now in 2026, "JJ" can run around and play with his siblings and other children, and participate in age-related activities. He is evidently more outgoing and playful now that he can walk, run, and play independently. As of now, "JJ" is continuing his physical therapy to further build his confidence and develop higher level mobility skills.

"JJ" story tells us that through consistent support and dedication from the family and rehab team, significant progress can be achieved over time. With patience and opportunities, every child has the potential to grow, learn, and develop.
